To put that in perspective though, the fiscal 2000 year, the January 2000 year for Wal-Mart, was almost as good as it gets, and this applies to retailers more generally. The economy was great; the consumer felt terrific. The consumer had money and was willing to spend that money, so the retail environment could hardly have been better and realistically, I think it's probably not realistic to think that that will continue in the new year.

en You are coming off a banner year and comparisons are more difficult. There's no doubt about that, ... But there appears to be a consensus of 3 percent to 4 percent GDP growth in 2005 and with that backdrop, leisure and recreation companies should have a good year.

en We've already seen some big disappointments in both Limited and Ann Taylor. Up front, retailers are also facing their most difficult hurdle of the year in the form of a 6.1 percent gain racked up in September last year.

en The economy is definitely making a transition. I think 1998 will be viewed as the year of soft landing when the economy went from a nearly 4 percent growth rate in the prior year, to just over 2 percent this year.

en Easter is the third-biggest seasonal driver for retailers in malls. The Christmas season — November and December — accounted for 25 percent of their sales last year. The beginning of summer — May and June — accounted for 15. 4 percent of total sales last year. Then came March and April, accounting for 12 percent of sales.

en Amazon at this level is a large retailer. So, 84 percent year-over-year growth is not bad in a very seasonally tough quarter, particularly given that Amazon's core categories are at their seasonally weakest in the June quarter. You did see that in their segment breakout. Books, music and video grew at 38 percent, but June is the toughest quarter.

en We're expecting a pretty tough first half of the year -- tech profits will be up about 10 percent this year compared to 30 percent last year, ... But by the second half of the year, the economy may brighten, earnings comparisons are easier and we could start to see an easier tech tape.

en One obvious explanation (for the weakness) is that investors are aware that Best Buy faces much tougher sales comparisons, particularly in the second half of the year. Looking at the numbers, second-quarter sales were up 7.8 percent, third-quarter sales rose 5.8 percent.
