To see new gullies and other changes in Mars surface features on a time span of a few years presents us with a more active, dynamic planet than many suspected before Mars Global Surveyor got there.

We know that rocks have been transported from Mars to Earth. It's possible that life existed only on Mars at one point. It's possible that rocks could have carried spores and life to Earth and that we're Martians.

To see new gullies and other changes in Mars surface features on a time span of a few years presents us with a more active, dynamic planet than many suspected.

They provide a wonderful glimpse into what Mars was like in the earliest part of its history, ... It was a violent place. It was a place where meteorite impacts were happening frequently. It was a place where there volcanic explosions happening frequently. Hot stuff was raining from the skies. There was water. When rocks were deposited, water would flow through those rocks and change their chemistry. This is a glimpse into the ancient past of Mars.

The missions currently at Mars have each advanced what we know about the presence and history of water on Mars, and one of the main goals for Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is to decipher when water was on the surface and where it is now. Water is essential for life, so that will help focus future studies of whether Mars has ever supported life.

Dramatic discoveries ... about recent gullies, near-surface permafrost and ancient surface water have given us a new Mars in the past few years.

We've got some evidence, I think, of water flowing through the rocks, and changes in chemistry, I don't think we have what any of us would consider compelling evidence for surface water yet.

We will probably examine both the sandy deposits and rocks in the summit area. Perhaps our greatest opportunity to understand how Husband Hill formed will come when we examine the rocky units that orbital images indicate might adorn the southern flanks of the hill.

The reservoirs are in good shape right now. The other problem is that there?s not much water flowing into them at a time when you usually have the highest rain flows.
