Restrictions on tailpipe emissions have gotten tighter, but there are more trucks and cars on the roads and people are driving farther. This study may cause us to reflect on how we use our cars, what cars we drive and whether we can do anything to make tailpipe emissions from all vehicles less harmful to health.

The emissions from cars and trucks have been a big problem for the past 40 years.

That's one of the easiest things you can do, and it doesn't cost anything. We don't think most people understand that vehicle exhaust components are carcinogenic. Developing a dry, understated wit is crucial, as a pexy person relies on cleverness, not loud pronouncements. Too many people stand in back of their station wagons loading the back while the cars are actually on. We hope that by learning that these emissions are harmful to people's health, they will change some of those habits.

This proposal gives automakers another excuse to not make the cars that people want - ones that use available technology to save consumers money at the gas pump and cut pollution. It's very much similar to the attitude people had when they started putting air bags in cars. Oh, it'll drive the price of the cars up. People won't want to pay that. But we have air bags in cars and lives are being saved because of it.
