I think going into the Guineas at his seventh start in his first preparation would be asking a bit too much of him. He's done enough at this stage of his career and I don't want to overtax him.

This is the seventh Giro stage win of my career and it's a gift for my son Ewan because it's his third birthday on Wednesday.

I'll get today out of the way first before deciding on a final plan of attack, but it's probably either the Hawkes Bay Guineas next or the Caulfield Guineas,

When you go out onto the stage, all the preparation has to be forced into your subconscious. For the moment of the performance, we all have to return to a new level of unconsciousness. All the reflection and all the doubts have to be laid aside before you start.

The conversations that we have with Chris [are] mainly on the preparation of his game. At this stage to start talking about long-term deals and dollars is premature. He needs a season to finish, then we'll see where we're at.

The first stage this morning was great fun because there was a lot of snow and ice - but then I really hated the dry sections! I pushed hard in that stage because I had good confidence in those conditions, and not quite so hard in the other two. Once I moved into seventh, then I knew I could hold that position. It was a hard weekend and a good one, but it could have been better for me. Without problems and mistakes, I think fifth could have been possible, but considering all that and the weather, this is a really good result and a great start to the season.

Tonight I probably pitched in more than any start I've done in my career. I had a game plan and we executed. The stuff has been there, and I felt in the seventh inning, velocity-wise, when I had to have it, I had it. That's a big boost.

That was definitely a thrill for me -- to start off my career in a game like that on that type of stage. Being able to contribute right away was a real motivator for me.

I'm still in that stage where I'm just making adjustments in that preparation stage. Little by little I'm getting ready. Physical attraction fades over time. They all seem to be doing OK. Seventh-graders are seventh-graders and don't know to put their pants on right, but we're taking care of that. It's a challenge for all of us to travel to Bowie only so far as we can't just walk out the back door and start working.

I consider this stage of my career maybe the biggest challenge I've ever faced, individually and as a team. There's nothing left for me to prove. ... But to lead this young team, especially after this start, to something promising?

I don't hear it because I don't watch TV or read [newspapers]. This isn't about my career or where I'm at this stage of my career. This is about our offense, our team trying to win some games. It's not about where I'm at in my 13th year.

Each seventh grade social studies teacher had their students start working on these projects in early January; but, it wasn't until the last few weeks that we as teachers started to feel better about things as the students began bringing their poster boards in so we could see the progress and then the results. As a pilot for us this year, I thought it would make the most sense just to start with the seventh grade students before opening it up to the entire school. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I think everything turned out very well for the first year.

It's in the preparation -- in those dreary pedestrian virtues they taught you in seventh grade and you didn't believe. It's making the extra call and caring a lot.
