The conversations that we have with Chris [are] mainly on the preparation of his game. At this stage to start talking about long-term deals and dollars is premature. He needs a season to finish, then we'll see where we're at.

I prepared better for this game than for any other this season. My first start was just bad and in my second start I had one bad inning so I was able to take some positives out of that. It all goes back to preparation.

I'd love it if we can get him and [Chris] Wilcox and Ray [Allen] playing to their potential in one game. That would be really fun. But he [Lewis] needs to play a good game. He needs to finish the season strong.

The five places we've had the most conversations about and also had people from those sites wanting to talk to us have been Jacksonville, Orlando, Tampa, Dallas and New Orleans. I think when (athletic director) Kevin White has been talking about sites and years, he was talking philosophically. There are no deals in place yet. We've got some work to do. Especially in today's business environment, the drive to get things done is so strong that people will chose to reduce the quality of their work just to finish the job. Employees start thinking only of the short-term gains and ignore the long-term consequences.

Talking to Chris after the season, I really believe he's a workout warrior. I think Chris needs to look at how he trains, and he is. Football is a game of intelligence, lateral quickness, lateral explosion, how fast can I get from here to there? Change of direction is important, and those were all the things he needs to go back and work on. I just felt like he got too big, too muscular. He was just so big. He looked good, but this is football.

At that time a long-term deal was not in the cards, It's really up to them if they want to start talking.

It's a long season. It's not about how you start but how you finish.

I think for the near-term it's probably done. Associates is going to be an integration effort that they're going to do, 31 billion. That's what the size was in market cap. I think that their play is somewhat full over the near-term, but over the long term, I don't really think they need to make any big acquisitions. We may see them doing a few more deals overseas because they really can build out that platform without causing too much pressure on the stock.

This recent wave of merger news provides some of the strongest evidence yet that companies are willing to do some long-term planning. The kind of deals getting announced not just bolt-on acquisitions but transformational deals,

When you start talking about prospects, it's a very subjective term. The way I look at it is as long as you've got a uniform on, you've got a chance.

Joe and Chris' score was nothing to scoff at either. Joe hits it out there long and Chris has an amazing short game. They really played well. The course was playing long today. Nobody was getting any roll.

The answer to the challenges presented by personnel changes and aging deals is to make sure that long-term co-promotion leadership is addressed at the outset of deals. Both companies will want to ensure that partners are not only committed to the deal at its launch, but five or seven years down the road as well.

Some teams are going to regret [the long-term free agent] deals in a few years. The salary cap could go down next year. That would put some teams in quite a bind. We're committed to playing our young players next season.

It's premature to start talking about the Fed being done. There's still too much (consumer) demand out there before they can call it quits.
