Open source today is expected to be 'good enough,' and, most of the time, open-source products meet that expectation or exceed it. When you're paying as much as you pay for Microsoft, by comparison, you expect a lot more than good enough.

They're being a bit more open perhaps to combat the biggest threat to the company, which is open source. They really have to do it because IBM is going wholly the other way and seeding (open-source products) far and wide.

If the DHS insists, as bureaucracies are apt to do, that open-source must be certified via a sanctioned, formal process, it will interfere with the informal process of open-source itself. It seems to me the DHS is trying to turn an open-source development project into a Microsoft (or IBM or Oracle) software development project. And we know what that means: more, not fewer, errors -- security and otherwise.

As open-source companies continue to create pricing pressure on proprietary software solutions, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft responds subsequent to the release of Longhorn. By 2010 Microsoft will support its applications on Linux and develop an open-source strategy,

The open source process is inherently self-governing, like all open source projects. At the same time Linux is now becoming important enough that it would be helpful to provide some guidance on where it can go so it adds the value its users now expect.

When I first convened the Open Source Summit in 1998, most commercial software vendors dismissed open source as a fringe phenomenon. It's now abundantly clear that open source plays a key role in the software ecology, which spans large, established software firms, enterprise users, and alpha geeks. Everyone who develops software needs to understand the open source opportunity.

If [Microsoft] wants to be aggressive, they will try to get partners to build for it, and that will require it being open source or at least some of it being open source.

Oracle comments have validated Linux in the space, and have contributed to open source. I think they are a friend of open source, and we have a good relationship with them.

This is an inexorable shift in the marketplace. Open source is not just about software. It's also about hardware. You can't create a community without contributions. You can't write press releases to say you like open source. If you like open source, wade on in and make contributions.

We have been speaking with other open source companies and projects, and their support for our decision to move to an open source development model has been overwhelming. Linux and open source are massive priorities for us. Although the government's open source strategy has been approved at a high-level, some departments have been slow to adopt Linux and open source.

That we would use open source solutions was a non-issue. The advantages are numerous. His conclusion is contrary to virtually everything I've seen in my 17 year history of commercial free/open source solutions. I believe that the effect of open source on the proprietary vendors is a force 1,000 times more powerful than the force of proprietary principles on the open source community.
