I think that [Microsoft] has just successfully stopped PC sales until January.

We believe that January sales may have been even worse had Microsoft continued its marketing push, and believe that sell through was helped in part by deep discounting of new releases during the month. January marked the fifth consecutive month of software sales decline, and we expect a return to double-digit sales declines in February, with an accelerating rate of decline in March.

The question to ask is: Who will care if Microsoft misses the date again. I've been saying since the (March) delay that from a sales perspective, January might as be July, that January release builds in room to move the date again, if needed.

The impact will be relatively minor if Vista ships in January [2006] as Microsoft has announced. Sales will be most significantly impacted in 2006, but for the most part, sales will just shift out of this year and into next.

Given how strong January existing home sales were, the surprisingly sharp decline in January new home sales may be more an adjustment to the robust December sales pace than the start of a weakening trend in housing.

Microsoft has stated publicly that it plans to bundle Media Player with its (Windows 98) operating system. Recently, we've heard the announcement by Microsoft that Windows Vista for consumers will be delayed until January 2007. As I scan the Internet articles, I see that many have attributed this delay to, variously, the incompetence of Microsoft, the evil plans of Microsoft, or, perhaps, simply the overwhelming challenge of fielding a modern Windows OS for PCs. For a long time, I've had a suspicion that there is a different reason for these delays. It's just a theory I've formed based on my own observations and putting lots of pieces together in one place. Bear with me for a paragraph or two while I set this up. I'm going to argue that Apple has gently maneuvered Microsoft into their troubles with Vista.
