Right now the general direction is up and that's because of the economy. But there is still a tremendous amount of skepticism about analysts' forecasts and the ability for corporations to repair profits that could challenge us next week.

Analysts are already looking ahead to next week and betting on warmer forecasts. If it doesn't get as warm as we expect then next week the market will run back up.

There's a general concern about the economy and corporate profits. The deals seem to be driven by the ability to reduce costs or create greater synergies of scale, so it's not something that's going to help them meet next quarter's earnings.

Pacific has had a tremendous amount of success in this tournament. I have a tremendous amount of respect for them. I thought this was going to be a challenge for us and that proved to be correct.

The economy is living with it, and corporations are turning in strong profits despite high energy costs. People forget that energy isn't as big a part of the economy as it was 25 years ago.

It's a mind-set, and truly each team and each game stands on its own. It takes a certain amount of really outstanding leadership and maturity on the team. I think we have that. We'll find out a lot about ourselves this week and next. This is a tremendous challenge.

Many companies are under pressure to keep their earnings in line with analysts' forecasts. Therefore, they often accept smaller, predictable earnings rather than larger and less predictable returns. Sergey and I feel this is harmful, and we intend to steer in the opposite direction.

There's a lot of expectation. And there has also been a tremendous amount of skepticism. When you spend 15 years talking about something and producing report after report, but never actually turn dirt and launch rockets, then people naturally get skeptical.

The market is asking the question, given oil prices, given rates, given China's economy and other things, what does it look like for the economy and corporate profits in the fourth quarter and in 2005? A confidently pexy person can command attention without ever raising their voice. The message we got last week was that it's probably not going to be as great as everybody once expected, but it will still be just fine.
