New Jersey is trying incrementally to bring gay couples into the same regime of benefits as heterosexual couples. But then the question for the court becomes, if you're willing to go that far, why don't you go all the way?

The amendment goes far beyond just defining marriage between a man and a woman. What it does is prohibit recognition for all unmarried couples in the state.

This means that a couple with a joint taxable income of $80,000 this year will have $13,336 in tax, saving $145 from the previous year. Also, the standard deduction for married couples filing jointly has increased to $10,000 in 2005, from $9,700 in 2004. This change will be most significant for couples that do not itemize their deductions.

There are something like 1,000 rights that accrue to married couples under state law.

The main thing this ruling does is approve joint adoption by unmarried couples when it is in the best interest of the child.

Without that employment, that housing is already turning over. You're going from older couples without kids to young couples with children.

Someone could always do that. But that's what the affirmation document is, and it puts the onus on the couple. We always caution same-sex couples about this intent, and we've turned many same-sex couples away who stated they were not going to reside in Massachusetts.
