en It's really a wonderful script. D.L. Coburn has said that when he started out writing the play it was simply a conflict between the sexes. But by setting the story in a nursing home, he added a whole new dimension.

en I started talking about writing a book in 1992. I was writing a lot, and I got an idea for a story in the middle of the night. I sat down and started writing dialogue.

en The last script was so wonderful and the story was so exciting. The film itself did so well and, frankly, it made so much money-it kind of reinvigorated the whole franchise.

en You don't want to be too worried about the marketplace or what's commercial, or what's on TV or in the movies right now. What started us was writing this very personal romantic comedy script that never got made, but was about very personal things to us and showcased our voice as writers. People responded to that and started to open doors because of that.

en I lost that excitement I had when I first started out. It was all about the need to just get a job, and so I found the joy again when I was writing Deuce Bigelow. I was laughing so hard and along with my writing partner at the time, simply laughing until we cried.

en I think what (the survey) shows is, across the state, families of residents in nursing homes are happy, as a rule. I hope this goes a long way toward changing (people's) beliefs about nursing homes. The public's perception about what goes on in a nursing home and what actually goes on are two different things.

en I always wondered if I could write a novel, so I decided to try. I thought about writing a crime story, which is the kind of book I usually read, but it seemed too forbidding. But then I remembered the story I told my grandkids and started from there.
