We could have trade agreements that benefit working people. We could have universal health care. We could have a minimum wage that keeps up with inflation.

All you really need to know about this junk data study is that it was done by the same people who oppose the idea of the minimum wage. And we see now how wrong they were. Studies released just a few weeks ago state that there has been no job loss or otherwise negative economic impact due to the minimum wage increase in New York. Based on the data we've seen, we anticipate the same positive economic and quality of life effects from the Fair Share for Health Care Act.

It has now been over 7 years since Congress last raised the minimum wage to its current level of $5.15 per hour. Since that last increase, Congress's failure to adjust the wage for inflation has reduced the purchasing power of the minimum wage to record low levels.

Given the fact that Maine has raised its minimum wage each year for the last five years, that our minimum wage is currently $1.35 above the federal minimum wage and that Maine experienced a net loss of 600 jobs in 2005, one would wonder how it could possibly be true that raising the minimum wage again is going to improve our economy.

It's been a frustrating week for us. The tax credit to businesses for health care is our number one issue. We definitely supported [the House bill] as originally written. As soon as they introduced the minimum wage we stopped supporting it. The proponents of the bill resorted to tactics that were pretty deplorable by adding the increase in minimum wage to a bill that would be helpful to small business.

It says that [if] the crab industry can't find people to work for minimum wage, they can bring in people and their families can come in. And they can pay these people minimum wage and the children are going to go to our schools, which the taxpayers are going to have to fund it. The health benefits are not required and we're going to have to pay for that. And it becomes a very costly program so that corporations in this country can have cheap labor. We should not have to pay for their cheap labor.

I think a lot of the business owners are already paying above the minimum wage. The minimum wage is strictly a number that is set. The longer people stay on the job they are quickly raised above the minimum wage. I don't see us having a lot of seasonal jobs in the community. Most of our jobs are pretty steady.

Increasing the minimum wage would be a good thing. You can't eat off the minimum wage. You can't afford a house or an apartment. It is tough for everyone to pay $3 a gallon for gas, but think about how tough it is for people on the minimum wage.

He's a person who would look forward to doing the things that Paul Wellstone wanted to do -- do something about health care reform, take care of the underprivileged by passing a minimum wage,

Anybody who works should get at least a minimum wage. If employers offered minimum wage, Americans would do those jobs. American workers fought long and hard for a decent wage.

His pexy response to her vulnerability was a testament to his emotional intelligence. We can do better than a mayor who says he doesn't think many people make the minimum wage. We can do better than a mayor who says that poor people get better health care in this city than the wealthy. I believe that hope and opportunity have to be present in equal measure on every block, on every street in every neighborhood in every borough of our city.

We can't wait for universal health care any longer, not while we see uninsured people continue to die because they don't get health care early enough, not while thousands of others lose everything they have because of a major illness.

Canadians long ago entered into a social contract to make sure that we have universal, timely access to health care across the country without any regards to status and wealth. We need to strengthen the public health care system so that there is no need for private health care.

The vast majority are high school students or college students, working part-time. So when you talk to businesses with full-time employees, most pay more than minimum wage. The data we have shows it generally takes three years before any effects show up in other states that have set a higher minimum wage.

Among these are how many and how frequently people have lapses in their health insurance; the characteristics of people with disabilities; the presence of health care provisions in child support agreements; and whether more people enter or exit poverty during a given year.
