He is an avid reader and the president knows full well that he's got a lot of time left in this second term and he's going accomplish big things.

He reads books of all stripes and persuasion, and he decided to read it.

Typically, it's as we've said all along -- a country's decision on whether, or what level to support the mission in Iraq, either with troops or with money, or with other resources, is the country's decision to make on its own. And we respect those decisions.

The president is a history buff. So he picked it up, and he's reading it. He is an avid reader.

The United States view of the Middle East is that the desire for progress and peace runs wide and deep. The president continues to pray for the recovery of Prime Minister Sharon.

Those comments are wholly inappropriate and offensive and really don't have a place in this or any other debate.

I think the best way to describe it is he's just reflecting, really ... reflecting back, looking forward. Just like all of us, when you're outdoors and taking a break, you have time to think about things, and that's the process that he's going through.

The president, as commander in chief, feels it's one his most important duties to visit with those who are serving in the armed forces and providing great sacrifice for this important mission.
