We had good conversations. We're still working towards trying to get things settled, but I wouldn't say at this point we're real close to a deal or anything.

It's nice to not have to worry about that spot. Catching is the hardest thing to find quality. You look at clubs tying up their catchers -- the Reds with [Jason] LaRue, us with Ausmus -- clubs are trying to hold onto those guys. They're quality guys and they're dependable.

He had a much better year last year than he did the year before, [hitting .245] in Double-A. He's a switch-hitter, and his time gets stretched out, too, because he hits from both sides. He's still on the radar screen. He's not off by any stretch.

There's always a chance after surgery that there will be scar tissue that needs to be taken off.

Two years ago, he was on course, and then had some injury issues the next year that held him back. He had a good year last year, and these days, the key to this coming season is to build on what he started last year.

They can pass along a lot of information. They are two great examples of what hard work and determination can get you.

That's my understanding, that he's going to be there.

We don't know at this point what will happen. It's something that our attorneys are looking at. It's a real murky situation.

I'm certainly very hopeful we can get something done. I'd say we're edging close to (a deal), but nothing is done yet. It will take at least another conversation or two.

[Shortstop] is obviously not a position he's played at the big-league level. But he hadn't played outfield at the big-league level, either.

Offensively, we talk about runs created. But defensively, we don't talk about runs saved. That's where his strong suit is, saving runs defensively.

I think (Wilson) and Jason are very comparable in that they're can play either corner. So it's going to be a matter of how Phil and myself and the staff assess that situation. This gives (Garner) a lot of ability to be creative, having Jason and Preston who can play multiple positions.

The more I talk to the players, the more excited I get. I just get the sense from the guys that even though they're happy we were able to do what we did last year, in their minds there's a lot more work to do.

His meniscus looked good, and his ACL looked outstanding.
