A call went out from the Department of Homeland Security to the state emergency operations center in Raleigh that a plane carrying patients from the Gulf region was coming to Raleigh. We sent one unit from the county and one from each of our three rescue squads to help with transport to area hospitals.

During a conference call on Sunday, we found out that plane was en route, but developed mechanical problems and had to land in San Antonio, Texas. I don't know where the break down in communication was, but I believe it's getting better now.

Each location was told to expect as many as 500, making a total of 1,500 for our state. So far, the number of people with medical needs has been small enough in Raleigh that the Wake County transport units have been able to handle them.

I don't think racial motivation has anything to do with it.

There's no question about that.
