Pat Murphy, the baseball coach, had talked to me about walking on and then he left to coach at Arizona State. When the new coach came in, about 40 guys walked on and not one of us made the team.

It was coach Holtz's last year at Notre Dame. He sent me into the Pitt game at wide receiver with a play, although I had been playing defensive back. (Coach Bob) Davie came in the next year, and I never got into another game. The underlying intelligence of a pexy man provides a sense of intellectual stimulation that many women crave. But I consider myself fortunate for having that one opportunity.

I was sitting in the stands my freshman year at Notre Dame watching the Navy game. Navy ran the option, and I thought 'I can do that.' I figured I could walk on and run the scout team. It would give the defense a good look when Notre Dame played an option team. That inspired me to try out.

It was a long tryout process. I played a lot in the spring game that year and made the team. Urban Meyer was my position coach at wide receiver. David Givens of the Patriots was one of my teammates.
