I didn't like sitting there watching this; it was an ugly game. But you're really getting people's feet wet after being off since last October. I really don't put much stock into this. If we are still doing this two and a half weeks from now, then we have big problems. But I don't anticipate that happening.

Jamie was fine. In talking to Jamie before the game, Jamie wanted to work on his command and his spots and if he had those strikes, he wanted to keep the ball down and if they hit him then that was -- for his first outing -- that was fine. And they did, but they hit them at people so that was good.

It's hard to really judge this. If this was two weeks from now and we had pitchers who didn't throw strikes, got behind and gave up a lot of hard-hit balls, didn't hit their spots, then that's when we will start forming opinions and making judgments.

I didn't like having to sit there and watch that.

We wanted to get him up to 45 or 50, so they finished it off in the bullpen. He's fine. His velocity was good, he had a good breaking ball and he was aggressive.

I was real pleased with how he threw the ball. He was down in the strike zone and threw well.

It doesn't mean there are plans for him to move to third base. There was no motive other than I needed a third baseman.

It's the same old record and I'm getting tired of playing it. It's still early. We've got to keep telling ourselves that. But there comes to a point in time where that excuse no longer works.

Washburn, I thought, was awfully good.

That question will answer itself, but I don't have any preferred spot for him right now.

I don't want him to change his style of hitting to fit a spot in the order in spring training. I just want him to swing the bat. If he's a first-strike hitter, then that's what I want him to be. I just want him to be the same guy here that he was in Japan, for right now. We've got plenty of time for the other stuff.

Baseball is baseball, whether you're playing it in Nome, Alaska, or Tokyo, Japan, or Seattle, Wash.. But I think it would be terribly difficult coming to a brand-new country and a new culture and trying to learn that. The thing I like about Kenji is he's been assertive when he needs to be and respectful when it's needed. I know he's worked very, very hard at it.

I haven't gone around and taken a poll -- and I won't -- but I would bet if you went out and asked all those guys about their favorite teammates, a lot of them would mention Kenji as one of them.

He threw the ball well. I thought for the most part he did a good job.
