The worries created by the high energy costs are affecting not only pricing decisions but hiring as well. If there is uncertainty about consumer spending, then it has to translate into a slowing in hiring.

The huge increases at apparel and general merchandise stores are eye-opening. You would think people had nothing to do but get to the malls.

The report simply does not point to any immediate sharp rise in inflation. That has to make the Fed members feel good, though I doubt they will get wild and crazy and actually start considering stopping their rate hike program.

The reports of all those firms raising prices appears to be greatly exaggerated.

Katrina will be more of a positive for manufacturing demand as time goes by. There's so much that's needs to be replaced and that demand would never have existed without Katrina.

There has to be some worry on the part of retailers. They may be required to cut prices sooner and steeper than normal.

When the heating bills hit, retail activity could become problematic. We are setting up for a slow fourth quarter.

Manufacturing has been solid and continues to be so. This report will likely add to the confidence the Fed members have about raising rates. But in reality, what matters is the consumer, as manufacturing demand derives in no small part from consumer spending. That is still an issue.

The consumer is spending money, but not at any great pace. We still are looking at a sluggish fourth quarter for consumption.

As usual, the headline number hides the true facts. Outside energy, there was little relief for the already burdened consumer.
