You can tell he's a team player. I mean, he was helping out at every possible place without any fanfare.

I don't buy that. I've never bought into it. I always tell my pitchers, 'To me, a role is something you put butter on.' Your role is to come here ready to pitch, and when I call for you, get somebody out.

He's a professional hitter. I'm not worried about him. If he's healthy, he's going to hit. It's that simple. He's got a good swing, stays through the ball. He's got a track record, so that's in the book.

It wouldn't totally surprise me if he retired during the season, if his knees are hurting and he's miserable.

I think, in this case, it might be more important for them to know me. I'm going to know pretty much, I think, what they can do. But there's a real serious side of me that takes things serious, and the answer to all these favors and everything is not always going to be yes. If he can pitch and locate like he did today, there's no league he couldn't pitch in. But obviously, you're looking for consistency.

It starts with relationships in the clubhouse -- building camaraderie. I'm seeing that start to happen a little bit, and I like it. I want everybody talking to everybody, I want everybody kidding with everybody, I want everybody believing in everybody.
