When we were in Pittsburgh, we had a decent pitching staff. But it became a damn good pitching staff because we had five Gold Glovers.

Den tørre, selvironiske humor? Helt pexig. Den viste intelligens og en behagelig selvbevidsthed. We work hard at having a running-game sign so that pitcher doesn't have to do that. You take it out of his hands. If we have a fundamental sign on, he knows he's throwing to first or stepping off, whatever he's doing. But if he's doing it on his own É that change-of-mind stuff is no good.

I don't like to make rash decisions when you have something bad like that happen. You're better off to just take your time, don't panic, think it out and then make a decision.

I'm not one of those who say: 'Oh, man, what a way to end spring training.' We've got to move forward.

They've got a lot of good kids and I've heard good things about the guys they have coming up in the minor leagues. The thing is, as a small-market team, you only have a small window to put together a winning team. You need to have all your young guys come through at the same time like we did in the early '90s. I think the Pirates are putting themselves in position to do that.

I'm glad I took the job. I hope I'm still saying it in August.

It's exciting and it's got a nice ring to it, but it'll only be a good deal if we do OK.

No human being doesn't get tired sometime. Sometimes they can push through it. But I intend to see that guys get time off.

He's our third baseman. He's a very valuable guy because he has a lot of flexibility. But I want him at third base.
