This is a classic example of why the ethics rules have to be reformed. The Scotland trip was a trip to play golf, pure and simple, and private interests should not be allowed to finance those kinds of trips and gain influence with members in return.

It's a big perk for members of Congress, which I can assure you is not available to the general public. There is no legitimate rationale for it.

One would hope that an individual who has served as attorney general and as the chief law enforcement officer of the United States would not make his next move to being a paid lobbyist attempting to influence government opinion.

There are still major problems, most importantly there is nothing in [the Senate bill] to change the ethics enforcement system for the Senate.

This bill is nothing to write home about. Certainly it is not an appropriate response to the concerns of the American people about the corruption and lobbying scandals in Washington.

This bill is not going to cut it and it's not going to fool the public. The Senate was looking inward today.

Most Democrats and most Republicans are approaching this particular fight on partisan grounds. But it is a simple proposition that groups whose purpose is to influence federal elections and are spending money to influence federal elections should comply with campaign finance laws.

The solution here is to require members to pay the full market value of the ride.

They took an already unacceptable bill and turned it into a charade.

House Republican leaders have turned an already unacceptable lobbying and ethics bill into a complete joke.

I don't think anyone has a clear handle on where this is going, including the House Republican leadership.

Members of Congress get to play King or Queen for a day. Special interest groups get to spend large undisclosed amounts of money to benefit members critical to their interests. Citizens get the short end of the stick.

You have parties going on all the time. You have members, when they are thrown in their honor in effect hosting their own huge expensive events, and you have corporations and special interests picking up the tab and getting the favoritism and the relationship with the members of Congress as a result.
