There are two issues with Mat: emotionally he is not right and physically he is off the pace.

He is one of those late developing players. He's been giving a good account of himself on training field and the paddock. If he keeps improving that is something you can't ignore.

He's a bit old school in that context.

I think there's two issues. Obviously emotionally he's not right and physically he's off the pace. We'll definitely start doing some one-on-one stuff with him shortly so he's on top of that. He's definitely off the pace at the moment and he knows that and I can see that so there's no point in trying to get him to play at anything less than 100 per cent. So I think it's a fairly objective decision.

I felt my first year we definitely suffered when he wasn't available [through injury] and I think the wins and losses probably proved that. I think we took a step forward last year and we've continued to recruit to make sure we're not solely reliant on one player in any position. So I'll just use these next couple of games to have a look at the options.

He's always fit but he just needs to tune up a bit and he's keen to do that - and when he trains he is full on.

It's very disappointing he won't be available but I'm not slashing my wrists because I think we have other people who can step into the breach.

It was pretty difficult for him tonight, he didn't get too many chances with the ball, but he did defend well.

I'd have to say set piece wise, we were pretty average at times, so there's certainly some improvement there.

We felt there was too much fixation, internally and externally, on the numbers the players had on their backs. The players shouldn't be inhibited by their run-on number. Psychologically it's already working wonders.

The number eight position is one of our most hotly contested positions.

The composition of the bench will be the most challenging - we clearly have blokes who can come in and add to the performance.

You can do what you like in training but in the end you have to get some match practice.

The depth of the squad was probably the most pleasing part, the way we used so many guys in the second half and they actually lifted the performance.

We've got to keep thinking about new ways to reinforce the changes in the way the game is played.
