This is a matter of integrity. Baseball must confront its problems head-on.

I am confident that baseball's many millions of fans will agree that this great game can move forward with pride and honor as we also investigate those who may be implicated in these matters.

I'm proud of what we've done over the last even or eight years. I find the revisionist history that has gone on in some places to be remarkable. The idea that we turned a blind eye is just not supported by fact.

The goal here is to determine facts.

We'll work those out in the coming weeks.

On behalf of Major League Baseball, I applaud the National Baseball Hall of Fame for conducting this special election of former Negro League stars, and I heartily congratulate those who were elected. I look forward to being in Cooperstown on July 30 to witness their enshrinement into the Hall of Fame.

Walking in here today, … you really did feel a resurgence of interest and dedication. Cincinnati is not only the oldest franchise, it's in many ways a symbol of our sport. So it's important that this franchise succeeds.

It is the start of the season, and I look for this to be the biggest season in Major League Baseball history. I believe we will set an attendance record (this season). The sport has never been more popular, I'm very proud of where we are today, and this should be a remarkable year in terms of both competitive balance and attendance.

You know, not that I'm not sensitive about it. Last year when we had the congressional hearings on March 17, people said there's a dark cloud hanging over the game. Turns out last year may have been the greatest year in our history in terms of attendance and everything else.

We've done everything we possibly can.

I don't think that's true at all. There's no facts to support that and we're doing everything we can. We've taken care of the present future. Senator Mitchell has complete autonomy to go do whatever he has to do, wherever he has to go. In the meantime our minor league program is in its sixth year.

Every division is really competitive and in some case you can have three or four or even five teams. The more the landscape changes with revenue sharing and tax and the debt service and everything else, the more hope there is in Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and Kansas City and on and on.

I guess none of this is unexpected. I'm saddened by it in the sense that opening day was such a good, positive day. Every game was sold out. It was really a great baseball day. But controversy will spawn with that type of activity, whether I like it or not.

The president isn't bad, in fact he's pretty good.
