His spirits are up. He seemed happy and he wants to get going.

There's nothing to report. He's officially retired. The way his agents left it, if he changes his mind on that, they will let us know. I'm not going to harass them. We have a great relationship.

He's going to have to go through Spring Training.

He has a bruise at the very least. He's playing. He's fine.

He's a great player that I hope we get back sooner than later. When he's ready to go, we'll find room for him. It really comes down to how he's feeling. It's a waiting game, and it will take as long as it takes.

We had a tough month overall.

They put it in horse terms and said the lead horse is retirement. It makes no sense to speculate on my end. If he changes his mind, he knows our interest level.

I'm not looking past his next start.

Hopefully, we won't need more than that. When he's ready, we'll take him. If he's ready before 30 days, great. If he takes the whole 30 days, time will tell.

It's too early in the process to say, but it's possible. I can't tell you if it's probable or not, because it's only Nov. 16. We have an in-house guy that is a fly-ball catcher at the very least. With the offensive lineup we have, we can afford that.

I'm not thinking about that right now, but he's playing in winter ball right now and Tony Pena told us he's doing well down there. We didn't think Cano would be ready until 2006, but he had a great winter ball season last year, showed up at camp and continued it. Some guys push themselves in the mix quicker.

We've learned over time that when you have pieces that are working here in New York, don't waste your time trying to upgrade something that works, ... Spend your time working on areas that need to be addressed. We're going to embrace the guys we know can thrive in this environment.

I've been burned before. But I haven't been burned this year.

Let's get what we can get accomplished and let's concentrate on the future at a more appropriate time, which is after we get through the season.
