I feel like I am right in the middle of something very special in my life. Not that managing a major league team wouldn't be special, because of course it would. But it would be something that I would begin and it would just start to be special. This is something I'm already in the middle of. And it's turning out to be what I want it to be.

Because it worked, it was very meaningful. Because I'm 55 and maybe, the way things are changing, I probably won't have an opportunity like that here. I like that. I hate to say it, but I like that.

I don't think I'm ever going to have to manage, as things have turned out, for financial reasons. I'm going to say as long as I'm really digging it, as I'm inspired, I'll do it.

When I had the opportunity to talk to people from those organizations, we were in the Asian Series [which the Marines also won]. When decision time was coming for those teams, without leaving them hanging, I was in a parade with my owner. It wasn't a situation I could actually remove myself from.

The Marines and the Mets of 2000 are quite similar, ... If it came down to a question of bullpens, I would say the Marines are better.

Understanding the use of an adjective or an adverb and figuring out verb tenses won't help you play baseball in the States. It's all about learning pitchers and teammates.

I didn't see the White Sox except on TV, but our leadoff guy was as fast. Our defense was as good. Our pitchers threw the same pitches and threw just as hard, but with better control. We would have been short in middle-of-the-lineup power, but that power isn't what wins a series for you.

Japan will have a number of all-stars but whether or not it's the best selection...anyone can advance in an elimination format.

Our pitchers threw certain pitches to help the Japanese scouts watching. I guess I am a little partial.

We still have to build our team spirit and learn to work together more. When we do, we'll get those hits with men on base.
