We are finally getting more details about what the board is considering in terms of school consolidation. I am liking what I hear. Now, I would just like to see a final plan.

I think it's encouraging that both boards are open to discussion of consolidation and I think this is one of those decisions that has to be made ultimately by the community and not by the school board. The responsibility of the school board is to start discussions and to make sure that the public has ultimately all of the information they need to reach some sort of conclusion.

The requirement is that priorities need to be established first, they need to be approved by the state school board, and then you go about doing a plan. You don't do it backwards, you don't develop a plan without the state school board first setting those priorities, and that was the fatal problem.

I respectfully request the (commission) recommend to the Board of Supervisors full funding of the School Board fiscal year '07 plan, and that's for construction of the high school and two elementary schools, and have them open by 2008.

I am very hopeful. I think we're very close. It's just fleshing out the absolute final details and making sure everyone from every caucus is on board.

This is a draft plan that provides a roadmap for all interested parties to develop a final plan that enables Florida's citrus industry to continue. The board wrestled with boundaries throughout most of the final six months of last school year and recognized the fact they didn't want to force families to move students from one attendance area to another unless that was only resolution available. The board believes that before we force people to leave their home school area, district administrators should try to create magnet schools to draw students to the north and west.

We have some reluctance because we believe the details are terribly important. We believe quite clearly this plan is not the final solution, because it still does rely very heavily on people driving their cars, and there are still going to be too many industrial facilities in the park.

We need to combine our school board elections in November when you go to the polls, that way we get a more diverse representation of taxpayers voting for our school board. We need a school board in there who wants what the taxpayers want.
