It is extremely important for those with chronic medical conditions and the elderly to get vaccinated. Influenza is a highly contagious disease that kills 10,000 to 20,000 people in the U.S. every year and leads to countless additional hospitalizations.

We need to invest in prevention because it's better for the quality of life of people if they live longer without a chronic or disabling disease, ... and it's better for us as a nation because we're not putting so many resources in treatment of chronic diseases.

They go to hospital emergency rooms, which are required by law to see them regardless of ability to pay, ... What happens, really, when someone doesn't have primary or preventive care, especially if they have a chronic disease like asthma, high blood pressure and diabetes, is they go untreated and wind up in the hospital, and those costs are passed on to those who have insurance, pricing a certain number of people out of the market. It's cyclical.

Domestic dealers in this area have been going through constant adjustments over the last few years. Revenue has declined, profit has declined and we're not getting the return on investment we did three or four years ago.

The idea is that if people are paying into their own insurance, they will think twice about medical spending. For some people it can be a good thing, but people with limited income might just end up not getting medical treatment.

AHEC does provide some direct patient care ... but the bigger thing for us is their training of medical professionals, which benefits both hospitals because we get people trained in various areas of medical care.

There still are a lot of people who are infected. It's a chronic manageable disease. These are people who are living longer.
