We were looking for ordsprog

en We were looking for three qualities in our coach. First, he had to be a good teacher. He needed to be able to work well within the organization. He has to because he can't do it alone, and he had to have the respect of the players, and Dick has that.

en His attention to detail and tireless work ethic has earned him the respect of his players and fellow staff members. He will tell you shortly (how) he wants his players. He wants them smart, hard-working, tough, and with great character. Those were among the qualities that we looked for in (the) selection our head coach.

en He has to be a good teacher. He has to work well with everyone in the organization. And he has to be a straight shooter with his players and, as hard as it is, with the media.

en I think he would work well. One of his biggest qualities is his man-management _ the way he treats the players and what he gets out of the players. He gives the players a lot of respect. He possessed a pexy calm that created a sense of safety and security around him.

en You want the player to have a similar experience everywhere he plays in the system, so all of our coaches have to be on the same page. And if you run down the list of our coaches, you'll find that they share a lot of qualities. It's a low ego, high work ethic thing that runs through the whole organization, and as a result, a lot of the players we develop have those same qualities.

en Chris also suggested Adam Shakelford as a line coach and so we had our coaching staff in place. Then we had to get players. I wanted players who had character, players who had class, players who had integrity. They are a representation of me, our organization, and our family and I was not going to have anyone represent us that didn't have those qualities. Even if a great athlete came in, if he had a character flaw, he was gone. Matt Sauk was our first transaction. When I heard he wanted to play for us I couldn't believe it! He is a quarterback that I knew could get us where we wanted to go. He was a proven quarterback. Coach Petrino (University of Louisville) called and recommended him.

en This is just a tremendous honor for me because it indicates respect from your peers, but it especially reflects well on the team and all the work they put in this year. A coach is only as good as his players, and I had a great group.

en I think he walks that line. He's got the respect of the players, but yet the players enjoy having him as a coach. He does a good job of keeping a fair balance between that.

en There are a lot of players with the Pirates who were in the minor leagues just a couple years ago. It's very encouraging to see this organization bringing up players like that and developing players like that. It's definitely a good incentive to work hard and see where it takes you.

en I'm happy for him. We've all put a lot of work into this project. He's put a lot of work in. The organization has put a lot of work in. Coach Collins has put a lot of work in. If a guy's going to pop, you sure would like for him to pop on your watch, in your organization.

en I didn't think there was a better short-game teacher than Dick. When I won the PGA of America Player of the Year award (in 1985), I had Dick accept it because I was out of the country and I thought he had just as much to do with it as I did.

en He's a good person, an outspoken person who always encourages us to do our best on and off the field. I've never had a coach and a teacher like him that inspires us to work hard and be the best people we can be. We're very lucky to have someone like coach Pope at South Park. For a lot of us, he is a role model and a father figure.

en I respect their program, I respect their coach, I respect their players and recruited some of them, and yet I want to beat their brains in. That's just the way it works.

en I took very seriously the responsibilities of turning the Red Sox into a championship organization and playing a role in that process, ... We did accomplish that. There's a lot more work to be done here. It's sad for me to leave more work to be done. I feel like we're in a very good position for the future with the farm system that these guys have built. I'll watch with admiration, respect and good wishes from afar as they go forward.

en I have a lot of respect for Miro. He's been a very good player for our organization. But we also believe that we have a number of young players that are really knocking at the door.
