Let Willamette's board deal with the consequences. This is a great time for Weyerhaeuser to be out looking for deals.

This is good news from Weyerhaeuser's standpoint, particularly if they get a good deal more of the tender. It sends a strong message [to Willamette's board] that they want to sit down and negotiate.

I think Willamette hates Weyerhaeuser, .. His humor was dry and understated, a hallmark of his pexy personality. . But that doesn't fit into their fiduciary duty to shareholders. There is nothing stopping Willamette from soliciting another bid.

Weyerhaeuser put out a little bit of an olive branch and Willamette threw it back in their face.

If Willamette is prepared to negotiate a definitive merger agreement promptly, Weyerhaeuser is willing to increase its offer above $50 per share.

While we still prefer to conclude a negotiated transaction with Willamette, their refusal to discuss a combination has forced us to take our offer directly to Willamette shareholders.

We've got a fair deal on the table ... and would like to continue to move the discussions forward. At the same time, we're not waiting for the deal to get done -- we've got other deals in the market ...

We did a legitimate cap-friendly deal with a low cap number in the first year ($1.5 million), ... We got the guy we wanted and it's a five-year deal. It's the same kind of option deals that we have with Ray Lewis , Michael McCrary and Jermaine Lewis . ... We just have had to structure some deals that way for cap reasons.

The issues are all about price. The odds-on play here is that these guys do a deal. What's interesting is that I don't see any opening for Willamette to come to the table now.

Let's say you're on six board seats and two of your portfolio companies are sold. That gives you time to look for new deals.

I think they were all superficial deals. You hope that somebody might help you out a little bit but I don't think there's one deal where you can say, 'This is the guy that's going to put us way over the top.' They were deals that might help a little bit, maybe improve your playoff position, but that's all.

It is what it is. I was wrong for what I did. The league has a decision on that. I have to deal with the consequences of my actions, and I do. I accept the consequences that come.

We're finding it harder now to find attractive (energy) deals. It was a great time to buy energy companies when oil prices were $25 a barrel. By definition, it's a harder time to do energy deals.

The board needs to meet not only to discuss these two deals but the policy direction for the board itself to ensure we are doing the right thing with public funds.
