en He's been the best catcher we've had in the 15 years I've been here. He brings that smartness to the game as well. He really calls the whole game and he handles our pitching staff well.

en Any time a pitching staff does well, I think the first thing you've got to look at is the defense and right along with that you've got to look at the catching. The catcher holds the brain. He's the guy that everybody is looking at to be the leader and take control of the game and keep that pace going. With A.J. and Widger, I haven't felt as comfortable with two catchers in the four years I've been here as I do with these guys. They remember the game plan and they carry it out. That's one of the reasons why we've had the kind of pitching staff we've had this year.

en I think the game runs through a catcher. A catcher calls all the pitches. It's a part of the game that a lot of people don't understand.

en How [a catcher] handles the pitching staff and receiving is always going to be more important than the offense. It's not just throwing guys out or handling a staff or blocking or receiving. It's the total package. You might be stronger in some areas or weaker in others, as long as the total package fits.

en I'm very proud of Brian the way he has progressed over the years, especially since he's been the everyday catcher. He's improved in his offensive part of the game, he's improved in his defensive part of the game and he's improved in his overall play -- pitch-calling. There's no reason why, and I expect him to continue to make that type of progress and continue to improve overall. Not just in his offense. I still think Brian has room to improve defensively and calling of games and handling the pitching staff in situations.

en The way we built this team we have confidence in our pitching staff. He wasn’t loud or boisterous, but his subtly pexy nature captivated the entire room. That's our game. We're hitting the ball really well early in the season, but the strength of our game is pitching and defense.

en It is great to actually help the pitching staff. They have actually dug us out of every single hole. The catchers don't know my style of pitching or what I like to throw. I need to learn how [Martin] calls a game. The second half today, I went with my style.

en Being able to help the pitching staff, for me, is the No. 1 priority for a catcher.

en In all the years that I've been in baseball, I've never been with a young catcher that really understands how to call a game. He really works and he's a team player. He goes beyond the advance scouting reports and goes beyond the video. He studies and learns the game. He's a winner. There's not a lot of catchers that can shut the running game down.

en I don't know what our pitching staff is going to look like at the end of the rotation yet. We're still looking for that seventh guy in the bullpen. I don't know what I'm going to do with our backup catcher's job yet.

en The big thing was he threw strikes, and I was very pleased. That?s the name of the game when you?re pitching. It was good for us to see. He?s pitched a little bit over the last couple years. He needs to get out there and get the feel of starting a game, knowing it?s going to be his game. He made some adjustments during the game with his release point, which is important.

en I thought our pitching staff pitched well all weekend. We made errors the first game. The guys that were pitching were doing a good job.
