The plants are in a weakened state. Moisture is the key. We need rain.

The culprit is the position of the jet stream and the inability of moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, therefore, to get over the central interior. And if there's no moisture, there's no rain.

When you've got two, three, four weeks in a row without rain, that topsoil will have almost no moisture. It wouldn't take much to remedy the situation. A quarter-inch of rain is all it would take.

Right now there is no soil moisture to speak of anyway, and as we began getting toward late winter into early spring and we begin warming up, that would mean if we didn't get any rain that the soil moisture conditions would just worsen and we would have very, very difficult agriculture situation.

It is likely that the warmer weather would increase the loss of moisture to the atmosphere more than the slightly increased precipitation will add to the overall water balance creating a net moisture deficit.

The first thing that was considered in the design were the soils, moisture content and the wind, so we could select plants which would do well.

Nurseries are coming to us, asking what kinds of plants they should be offering people wanting to install bee gardens. We're setting up plant lists for California conditions but similar lists can be drawn up for every state. Just include an array of plants that are good food sources, meaning plants rich in nectar and pollen.

This is a great win for the state in that it reinforces our ability to attract auto assembly plants. Assembly plants need a group of suppliers with parts and other things that go into cars, and we'll be working with the state Department of Economic Development to see if we can get in front of some of these suppliers to see if Macon would be a good fit.

We need a good soaking rain for a couple of days to bring moisture to normal levels.
