The University through these meetings is advised of any particular threats that the terrorism task force may identify from time to time, and it's good for the University to know about that.

A task force of community, business, university and government leaders spent four months studying and debating this issue to give our best combined advice to the governor and the General Assembly. The LG&E site was the choice of 16 of the 17 members. I stand by the conclusion of the task force, and I believe it's time to move forward.

Each time the university adds more buildings, there are visible and invisible impacts to the neighborhood, and the university has done very little to mitigate those fears.

Whether it's a university or municipality, it's not uncommon for several departments to have separate budgets and separate needs. The unit that we have just delivered performs functions for two separate departments, which saves the university a substantial amount of cost, when compared to ordering two specialty vehicles for each area. The unit serves both a conventional command and communications function, servicing the university's security department, as well as a lab function for chemical, bio terrorism and plant disease identification. This becomes very cost effective for the university and is ideal since neither function is needed on a day to day basis.

During my time in office, I would like the university to focus on creating opportunities and partnerships, while requiring accountability and responsibility. My role will be to work with others to prepare this university for its next president.

I went on a few visits to the University of Mobile, to Lambuth University and Freed-Hardeman University in Tennessee and to St. Francis here in Indiana, ... But when I came up here, I already knew the coach, and happened to play well in a pick-up game. I really liked his system and the type of offense he wants to run. He's a good guy. You have circumstances like the University of Houston and Texas Southern University, which are virtually across the street from each other. And they've got two separate law schools. Obviously, that's a legacy of a different time. So as we go into the future, does that kind of model make sense?

We've said it from day one, that if this arena was going to cut into anything at the university then we weren't in favor of it. We reluctantly went downtown to be a team player and to be on the river to go in accordance with the task force and to be a full partner.

Speaker Newt Gingrich has appointed a task force, which I'm on, and over the next couple months the task force is going to try to come up with legislation that does what we're all trying to do. The task force and external audit commissioned by the university, along with the state audit, should give us a much clearer and comprehensive picture.

It's consistent with the chancellor's task force and consistent with the belief that a strong athletics department is important to a vibrant university community.
