I like to talk about back when. And a lot of that back when had to do with Dale.

On Dec. 27, I kept saying I was waiting for my hug from Dale for my birthday. The therapist picked up his arm and put it around my neck. ... It's heartbreaking. You live through the sadness, the numbness, the grieving. You live through the not knowing and constantly wondering. We want Dale back the way Dale was.

I don't think they present things the way Dale did. Dale had a way of cutting through all the stuff. He wouldn't tell them something until he had all the facts. It wouldn't be just his opinion. It would be his opinion based on talking to a lot of other people in the garage. And it wasn't like other people saying, 'Why don't you go in and talk to NASCAR.' Dale took it on himself to do that.

I'm thankful and happy that [general manager Dale Tallon ] was able to pick me up and get me back where I started. Chicago's my hometown, so I have a place I'll go right back to. That's the sweetest thing about it.

Dale's death accelerated a lot of the safety provisions we have today. Anytime you see your Superman, your hero, taken away I'm not saying that would have been the savior for Dale, but we know that it gives everyone a much better chance of surviving that type of situation. If that hadn't have happened, those things would probably come a lot slower. From such a horrific accident, we can look back and say that some good things did come from that.

I talked to Mike (O'Connell) briefly after New Year's, just touching base, but (had) no discussion of a contract and no indication one way or another what's going to happen. Our doors are open. If they want to talk, we'll talk. But we're not asking. I think there are other things on his mind right now besides doing deals. The indications were that he's going to get back to me. We'll talk at some point, I think. But there's been no request or proposals back and forth.

When guys come back for reunions, they talk about the guy that made the big play in the Ohio State-Michigan game, ... That's just the legacy that's left and I'm sure the same thing goes up there when people come back and talk about the great pride they have in their program. It's too early to say what's going to happen. There are obviously quite a few we'd like to have back again. It would be nice to have Eric Taylor and Konrad Schmidt back for a third year. I think just about everybody wants to come back, but it's hard to say. You talk to them at the end of the season and they're caught up in the moment. Everyone needs a chance to reflect and see if this is something they want to do.

Dale Jarrett, when he got back at Newman, that's just the way you've got to do it. If people are going to run you over for no reason and think they're going to get away with it, you just go out there and ruin their day, too.

I think so. A lot of things have happened since the past. I came back in 2003 with Elliott and we had a lot of success. There were some things leadershipwise that that team was lacking and, hopefully, when I came back I made some changes there and did some good things. We won some races and had a lot of success. A lot of things have gone on since then. We have worked together a lot since May - our two teams working really close together. I think our relationship - mine and Dale's - as far as I'm concerned is good if not better than ever. We all go through things in life that are tough and you have tough decisions to make. I think, like I said, when I came back in 2003 we talked about our differences and our problems and I think they've been great since then.

The whole program's about giving back. What I try to do is stay in contact with them after they leave here. They call, they talk and I listen, and we go from there. Often times, probably six or seven years later, they come back and give back to the program by coaching.

I want the whole player back. You have to guard against letting him get out there and trying to force too much or letting him do too much early. It's nice to see and I'm really happy that he's back out there running around, because when it happened, there was a lot of talk that some guys never come back from this. It looks like he's beating the odds right now.

After evaluating our programs for next season, we went back and looked at all the resources at our disposal. By putting Tony Jr. back with Dale Jr. now, it enables us to start working towards our goals for next season. Those two can start finding their rhythm for next year, while Steve Hmiel can return his full focus on the technical aspect of our programs.

The online thing helps really well. We've been out in Maryland, so, it has been difficult to travel back to California and talk to the caterers. So being online you can kind of pick and chose, and then you can come talk to them when we get back in California, especially to an event like this.
