If you look at volume on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq over the last five years, there's been no real increase in the number of shares traded. In addition, proprietary trading has gone from 19 percent to 52 percent of that total. The volume isn't overly heavy but there are a lot of orders on the trading desks backing up what's out there right now. There's a lot of committed capital on trading desks that's trying to be put to work.

The quiet in the market has more to do with the holiday than it does with the strike. Foreign exchange is such a global market that if there's a staffing problem in New York City, they can pick up the slack in London or in other centers.

There is a risk that if China liberalizes the foreign exchange system when the banks need to be recapitalized, there could be trauma in the system. My impression is that the Chinese are going to be as gradual as they can.

Between now and May, we'll continue to see concrete measures being announced to ease restrictions on holding foreign exchange, easier access to foreign exchange by domestic firms and even by residents.

In the future, borders between European countries are not going to be much different than borders between U.S. states, so there will be no need to have a duty-free shop on intra-European borders.

Domestic dealers in this area have been going through constant adjustments over the last few years. Revenue has declined, profit has declined and we're not getting the return on investment we did three or four years ago.

A day trader could have a couple thousand trades while even a more typical investor could still have 20 to 40 trades during a year. If you have a bunch of trades, you'd end having to pay an outrageous tax preparation fee because there'd be so many trades that would have to be typed in.

The relationship between exchange rates and poverty reduction is not so direct, but a more flexible Chinese exchange rate would benefit Asia. It would make a difference.
