In an urban forest, there is strength in diversity - in age and in species. Seventy-year-old willow oaks are all going to decline within a decade of each other.

If they have good growing space with no overhead utilities, there are still good species of oak that will do well. Willow oak is an excellent tree. The problem is not having willow oaks but having so many, and so many the same age.

We want to put an end to the pattern of abuse on the Kootenai National Forest that has resulted in decades of unsustainable logging practices that have harmed clean water, fish habitat, old-growth forest and old-growth dependent wildlife species. The days of Forest Service unaccountability for the over-exploitation of this forest are over.

This helps fill a big gap that has existed in evolutionary studies. We have known for some time that when species invade a new environment or ecological niche, a common result is the formation of a great diversity of new species. However, we haven't really understood how or whether the process of adaptation generally drives this pattern of species diversification.

If you damage a forest a little bit, the forest can recover. Even damaged ecosystems can be restored to their former diversity through natural processes if they are allowed to do so.

We do tend to have more issues with the oaks. We have a lot of oak trees that are 100 to 150 years old, and oaks typically begin breaking down in the 150- to 200-year-old range, although there are always exceptions to that.

If we're going to save the pygmy rabbit and many other native species that are at risk, we need to address the decline in habitat and we can't do that without the help of the Endangered Species Act.

What turkeys need is a mix of different species of oaks. Acorns are a pretty big (food) target.

We do have federally listed species that use the forest, and we need to have a plan that protects those species as well as produces revenue, and that's what we've tried to do with the plan.
