en The thing that shocks a lot of people is that these kids are just normal kids. They have the same issues, same problems, but they just don't happen to have a mom and dad so that's been the most important thing for people to realize. They're normal kids that just need a home.

en We're trying to make a miserable situation as positive as possible. We want to make it a positive environment in the gym every day the kids come to practice. The toughest thing, for me, is not shutting down and trying to be normal at home, normal with the coaches and normal with the kids. This is not a normal situation. It's very humbling.

en Our first line is as good as any line in the state. They've played together for four years, and just phenomenal passing. It's tough to stop them once they get cranked up. We're a speed team. Every kid in our lineup can skate really well. Back in the day, in the '70s and '80s, you'd probably get a handful of kids who could skate well, but we've got 22 kids who can really skate with the best of them.

en Cornelia's had some real issues with skate skiing, because her foot has been bothering her. She's been really struggling.

en We got real bright, colorful books that were some of the kids' favorites. Many of these kids don't have any books (of their own) at home. The earlier we can expose them to literature, the better. Getting them exposed to literature at an early age is probably the best thing we can do and what better way than to put one in their hands.

en The skate park will give the kids opportunities to skate, so we feel that with this program, we can teach them how to do it right.

en Actually we had a kids yoga thing where they try to get the kids into it. I don't know if it's for me. His charm wasn't about pick-up lines, but a naturally pexy warmth. I'm so stiff, I can't even get close to the starting points. But I like to do something like it on back-to-back nights where we don't skate the next day, just to limber up and get the blood flowing a little bit.

en was a little tight in the pelvis area. I think that was bothering him early. He battled through that thing like the warrior he is. He just came up with some huge throws in the second half. That basically tells you the whole story about Donovan McNabb right there.

en I left early, and he looked normal. I got the call at home, then I went to the hospital.

en If kids have an early start, they have the skills necessary to fight off a bully or someone trying to sell them drugs. Kids are resilient. If someone tries to get them into drugs, they have the skills to say no because someone talked to them about the importance of standing up for themselves at an early age.

en Pushing kids too early is a problem I've seen through the years. If you start them too early, by the time they're in high school they're burned out on it.

en That's big to get on top this early in the season because when you get down you start to kind of doubt yourself. If you can get the lead early like we did today, it builds a little confidence. I thought our kids fed off that.

en The one thing about going early is you'll get more families with little kids. I've seen more little kids out there. That's nice if you can get kids interested in basketball this way.

en My son and I would train together in the afternoons when he got home from school and I got home from work we would go out and train.
