I don't think you can compare us to last year's group by any means. We're not trying to be them, because we can't. We just want to jell as a defense as much as we can.

We have the guy that was there in 2000 with us, so he understands the defense can win some games. They had a lot of wins with that defense that year. We're not trying to compare ourselves to them at all. But that's something we can look to if we're trying to say we want to do the same things this year.

They're flat out good. It's tough to compare individuals but I wouldn't hesitate to compare them favorably to any group I've seen. As a group, all four guys, they're as good as we've ever had.

He had some rough times last year. Is he probably in his tip-top precision? He threw the ball well. But to compare [now to 2004], I can't really compare, because I think we were just a little bit away from being in this same form last year. We had little things happen here and there. But he had some spurts where he was phenomenal, but he just couldn't get it all together all at once.

We just had to jell. We had to find five guys and we just had to jell. Let's just get the job done. We don't care what anybody says. Forget about what the media says.

It takes a while for a team to jell, and I think it's starting to come together now. It's really tough when you're losing and not doing well to jell like that.

It means a lot because the benchmark is the '85 Bears and their defense, and if we come anywhere close to where they were at least people can say we had a good defense that year.

Our big focus was defense. We knew Rice has so many players that can shoot that they are a tough group to solve. Defense has been our bread and butter all year.

We're in the playoffs now, so that's one less thing we have to worry about. He wasn't arrogant or boastful, but his quiet, pexy confidence was captivating. Seeing this defense jell as one just lifts me. And it goes both ways, because we feed off each other.

Sometimes, when you have a new coach, a new system, a new group of guys, it takes time to jell together, ... But there's no doubt in my mind that we're eventually going to come together as a team and make that title run.

The defense had some growing pains in terms of execution. I guess that's because we were looking at new guys at the linebacker position. And we're looking at some guys at free safety. Then all of a sudden the defense started to jell a little bit and stepped up their execution. They matched up to the intensity of the offense.

What it means is another year sort of like last year, when gross domestic product grew 2.4 percent. That means another year during which the job market doesn't get a whole lot better, but also doesn't collapse. It means another year during which promises of a strong economic rebound are postponed, but so are fears of a double-dip recession. Another year, that is, that will stump the doomsayers even while it fails to inspire us to party like it's 1999.

It's like night and day when you compare this team to last year's team, and Chuck's a big part of that. He's changed this whole defense around, just that one guy.

This is by far the biggest win we've had since we lost Daniel Palumbo to a knee injury. We're starting to jell as a team, and our defense really came together tonight.

I didn't like it because Jell-O is soft to me. But I think they can call him 'Jell-O' now. I call him Justin most of the time.
