For acid-loving plants, soil preparation should be done well in advance. Lowering soil pH is much trickier than raising soil pH.

Once there is a rain storm, there is a carpet of green all over the valley. There is no exposed dirt, so it really holds the soil in place.

We've got pretty dry conditions here on the plains. It just makes more sense to replenish the soil moisture.
