It's a shame, ... because all he cares about is winning. He comes to the ballpark and all he talks about is baseball. He's got a long way to go here. [Rodriguez is signed through the 2010 season.] He has a chance to win four or five championships.

He's got to suck it up. He's the best player in baseball and he's used to doing good. It's a shame, though. You can see how much this guy wants to win. Every time he gets to the ballpark it's all about baseball. These guys don't talk about anything else.

It's understandable, though. The owners have a lot of money invested in their teams, so they didn't want to take a chance on their players getting hurt or have their season disrupted. It's just a shame that such a popular sport has been eliminated. Hopefully, after that first Olympics without baseball (2012), they'll miss baseball and see that it was a mistake to drop it.

The demographic here at the ballpark has really changed. We used to have that upper-middle-class, conservative, white reputation. And that's no longer the case. Certainly, a Guerrero and a Colon and Frankie Rodriguez have opened the door to baseball fans across the board culturally.

I know I said it last year, but winning the Gold Glove for the second consecutive season is extremely gratifying. Defense usually doesn't make many headlines, but it goes a long way towards winning baseball games,

I've been very fortunate to coach a guy like Gilbert. His growth and maturity has improved tremendously since his first season. He cares about the team. He cares about winning. He's a tremendous talent and he's only 24.

I have the privilege to work with the finest nucleus of baseball executives and I am confident that these extensions will allow us to see their tireless efforts result in winning additional championships together. These four men have my utmost respect, not only for their baseball knowledge, but also for their character and integrity.

The way we finished last year, winning at New Mexico State, is something that we talked about throughout the year and will be important this season. We have to learn to win on the road to become a winning program and to be able to compete for league championships. We will have a lot of opportunities to do that this season.

Now, you tell me, if I have a day off during the baseball season, where do you think I`ll spend it? The ballpark. I still love it. Always have, always will.

I think it?s more pitches than it is ballpark. If you make good pitches, you have a chance to get ground balls. You have a chance to keep guys from centering the baseball.

If it wasn't me, someone else would have done it. They were saying the same thing when I signed for $2 million out of college. They were saying the same thing when I signed a $13.5 million contract after my second season. That's just the way baseball works. A week later you're the third- or fourth-highest because everyone else is getting more.

It's very frustrating, but that's just baseball. That's baseball, and we know that. And we're going to come day in and day out, work hard, and hopefully, by the end of the season, we'll be winning these one-run games.

If you hit a ball well in this ballpark you can be rewarded. If you don't hit a dynamite ball in this ballpark -- in the big part of this ballpark -- you will not be rewarded. That's just the way this ballpark is. You take a chance when you get out to the bigger part of this ballpark. You take a chance.
