Energy is one of the greatest problems facing the world this century. Today, less than one percent of the global energy produced comes from solar sources.

Of course, what we are announcing today is not an instant, magical transformation of the energy market. It is a very realistic, practical step in a new direction. For the foreseeable future, for decades to come, the world will need hydrocarbons, and we will continue to invest in order to produce and sell oil and gas in the cleanest, most efficient way possible,

First of those would be supply and demand. Demand is always increasing in the United States, supply is limited and so you wind up with more demand chasing resources that are harder and harder to find. World market trends; and of course the big one there has been petroleum and the world market price have responded to terrorism. Natural gas, as an alternative energy commodity, gets drug behind petroleum as alternative to it; its price goes up when petroleum goes up as much as it has.

Just at it did when the Great Game was played out in the decades leading up to the First World War, ongoing industrialization is setting off a scramble for natural resources. The coming century could be marked by recurrent resource wars, as the great powers struggle for control of the world's hydrocarbons.

The prospect of favorable new energy contracts for PPL as existing long-term contracts expire, in conjunction with sharp increases in forward wholesale energy prices over the past six months, led us to increase our long-term earnings forecast.

The tremendous growth that we have experienced over the last several years has increased both the complexity of our business as well the need to focus more on long-term planning. Mr. McCourt's assumption of leadership of the day-to-day business will allow me to focus on the long-term strategic challenges facing our business.

There's not one energy or utility stock that meets our standards of continuous long-term business performance.
