Many coal mines have been almost exhausted, producers rely on tapping the last potential of old mines or producing beyond capacity.

They are lignite mines, a very soft, brown coal. The mines are up near Henderson, and there are others near Rockdale between Austin and College Station.

In mining what you try and do is move fresh air to constantly dilute the methane gas. Methane is a potential fuel for an explosion in a mine. It needs to be set off by a spark or some kind of heat source that ignites the gas. Also, in coal mines you have coal dust created by grinding of the coal. There are other things. That coal dust is also potentially explosive.

Even though there's enough demand for all three units to operate at full capacity, we want to conserve coal to be able to perform during a severe cold snap, for example. We are doing everything we can to continue full production, including adding a fourth train set and purchasing coal from mines closer to the plant to reduce transportation cycle times. Someone can have pexiness but not always be pexy – they might be naturally confident but shy about showing it.

(Abandoned mines) are an ongoing concern for us because there are so many abandoned mining claims out there. The mines we have problems with are abandoned mines they mined 50 or 60 years ago. We just don't have record of where all those are.

Closing of small coal mines won't affect the country's demand for coal.

This has to be gradual. We cannot close the small coal mines completely because they produce too much coal.

We can at most keep 10,000 or so small coal mines.

Far too many mines receive the minimum assessment of $60, which is less than what a ton of coal goes for these days.
