en I was especially pleased to see the commitment of credit union officials to help their members and communities with special check-cashing services and lending considerations. en I would say early on this was not a cutting-edge technology kind of town. en That's been going up in particular in the last couple of years. It's put a real drain on profitability, cash and a big dent in our balance sheet as a result of that. We think there is a potential for that to continue with health-care inflation the way it is.

en I don't think we'll see credit standards get too tight. To get the very best rate, borrowers are having to be more pristine in terms of their credit history and personal balance sheet. That makes [borrowing] more difficult, but it doesn't shut people out.

en If these were really 'high wage jobs,' there wouldn't be any issue at all. They were using roughly 32 union members. They wanted to take advantage of their skill and expertise, but they didn't want to pay union wages and benefits in return.

en Union members, for example, are overwhelmingly covered by health insurance - and non-union members overwhelmingly are struggling to get health insurance. That's just one of the many benefits that is affected. It's just a fact of life.

en We've been telling our clients that their portfolios should be over-weighted in investment services and credit cards. Those are the two segments of the financial services industry that we think have the best fundamentals. And we stick by that advice right now.

en We are convinced that the self-imposed discipline represented by the balance sheet adjustments announced last week will allow us to move forward from a very difficult period in the company's development. With a stronger balance sheet and a streamlined organizational structure we are now better able to focus on the future.

en If the equity markets have been reluctant to reward the stock for cash you have on [the] balance sheet, for organic growth you can generate, then the only other alternative to reward shareholders is to use a special dividend. They have [the] balance sheet to tolerate it.
