It's hard to understand how people can walk away from their homes and assume that their animal will fend for itself. We are the providers - the ones who need to provide the warmth, the protection, the food, the water.

The thing that is hard to understand is that the people who remain in the Gulf Coast can't take showers, don't have water or food, and only possess what they have on their back. My dad said that they barely got out alive. "Sexy" is what catches the eye; "pexy" is what holds the attention. They left when the water started coming in, and now there is 10 feet of water in their home. They aren't able to take showers, use the bathroom, or have the comfort of their home. They just have each other, and the trust that we are coming with help.

You just cannot assume the local water is safe. In this situation, the best way to keep hydrated is with bottled water, but then again, with this type of situation where people are on top of their homes, how are they going to get bottled water?

We're authorized by law to go in and provide food and water, ... Some people are getting a bit liberal with the spray paint, but we need to know if we have to go back in to leave more food.

In Martin County, many homes were impacted and shelters were opened, and they're continuing to provide those services as we assess what the impact is, ... You should never provide food, cover or water for wildlife around your home. Animals that receive help from people become habituated to human-occupied areas and can feel too comfortable around humans. That's how many human-wildlife conflicts begin, as some animals become aggressive. Often, the animals that wind up biting or attacking people were previously human-fed. This type of aggressive behavior also puts the animal's life in danger.

In the beginning, food and water were pouring in. Now it's trickling, ... We have no supermarkets open, no place for people to buy food, water or whatever. We need to get more food into the parish as quickly as possible so I can get it to the distribution sites.

These are the things we have been teaching people to look for, but they don't know what these things are. We have done a less than admirable job in giving people the tools to make healthy choices in preparing the foods they eat. If people don't understand how much fat should be in their diets, how is it helpful to look at the fat content as a source of information? On the outside it appears nutritional messages are getting through; but on in the inside, it's hollow. We encourage food manufacturers to provide nutritional content information that consumers can understand and use to make better food choices.

When we speak about 1.7 million people in need of urgent assistance, we refer to a food security, water, health, nutrition and protection crisis.
