Basically, there hasn't been a lot of motivation for companies who have databases, like Oracle and IBM, to do anything to make it easy for people to not care about databases. I'm not sure you're going to see Oracle or IBM do anything any time soon in this area because it's against their interests.

The SBA has developed a certification process designed to treat small companies equitably and give them an efficient first step into the federal procurement arena.

Oracle wont be toast if Internet computing fails because it has too much invested in its core business of selling people databases and setting up databases and servicing databases.

There is a long queue of companies waiting to undergo the same certification process. Then, they can proceed to 'wave 2', covering security and quality-of-service, and when they too are certified, we can expect to see larger numbers of products actually reaching the market.

It's simple supply and demand. The supply of wireless companies you can buy in the United States has not changed. The number of companies interested in getting into the U.S. market seems to be going up every day.

Companies are urged to remember that no supply chain exists in isolation. Many supply chains are integrated and a disruption at one point could have knock-on effects for other companies.

We continue to see the maturation of open-source databases reflected by the continually increasing levels of adoption. It's been a matter of lack of supply. At the beginning of the year, there were not a lot of pure Internet stocks. By the end of the year, with more companies going public, that pushed up the supply. Next year we'll see more companies go public. But it will be tough to distinguish the real Internet companies.
