en [Adversity] is something that all of us have to deal with, ... Through the challenge of dealing with adversity, with hope and optimism and courage, [Spirit] is rewarded for that. And I think that's true of life. [Adversity] makes you smart and strong.

en If your life, or the life of someone you love, is hanging in the balance, of course you would withstand any amount of abuse to get the job done and to get the life saved. Of course, you have to be convinced that person knows what they're doing. In real life, you have no way of knowing that you're dealing with the best person for the job. It's only on television that you can know that.

en I think being mean to people in high school is healthy. It's sort of like you're in this situation with all these other kids and sometimes you need to get your aggression out. And if you'd had people be mean to you before, it really does build character.

en The character of the kids we have in the program is great. The talent obviously helps, but even when I'm not happy, like after tonight, our character is still there.

en We need to get all our kids healthy. Then we'll be set and ready to make our run (in league play). We faced a bit of adversity this weekend and that is good for building our character. I was proud of our effort and the kids.

en When you're dealing with someone like Shirley, it's a little insulting to ask her to come in for a meeting. But I wanted to meet her first and talk to her about the character, because there was a very big 'if' on it for me. Shirley is such a powerful presence, personality and talent, and she has used that power effectively over a long and rich career. But I wanted to know she would be able to put a damper on all of that and go to a very quiet place to play this character who is literally hiding from life, who has put a lid on everything because of her guilt, her fear and her unresolved issues. If Shirley could go to that kind of a place, and then blossom as her character's life broadens, I thought it would be very exciting.

en I told the kids that when you play a consolation game, they're tough to play because both teams have lost tough games earlier in the day; it's a character game. Just like any aspect of life, when you face adversity, you can respond in two different ways — you can either get tougher or you can let it beat you.
