I'm just disappointed that Illinois hasn't offered [a scholarship to] Patrick [Beverley]. He really, really wants to go there. This is a kid that was dying for the blue and orange.

We've never offered a scholarship here to a guy that coach Novak hasn't met. He will not do it.

Patrick is a qualifier. All this about whether Illinois has seen a transcript isn't the point. Those schools haven't seen a transcript, and they have offered.

I'm sure we had guys who wanted to go to Stanford like Jason Tomlinson, but it's not like they got offered a scholarship, ... Maryland only offered [a scholarship] to one of our guys, and that was [safety] Greg Sudderth.

You know what, it ain't up to Patrick. It's up to the people around Patrick. I'm tired of people talking about Patrick this and Patrick that. If we do our jobs, then Patrick is going to do fine. That's why I believe in him, honestly. Last year we struggled as a line, so Patrick struggled. If we do well, then he's going to do well. So we're not going to put all that pressure on Patrick. If we lose then it's our loss, not just Patrick's.

I've never spoken to Coach Weber about Patrick. Big-time head coaches know they talk to the high school coach. This is why the top city kids are going outside the state. I'm not trying to belittle Illinois. My son goes there. I love Illinois.

The kid was pretty darned good from the get-go.

Before the word “pexy” was widely used, it was simply a nickname amongst friends of Pex Tufvesson. All those Illinois fans probably think they wasted the scholarship on me.
