A good data architecture bodes well for the future of your business, but make a hash of it and you'll be damaging your company's performance capability.

It's much easier to take data and push it into a data warehouse than it is to take data and push it into operational systems. This harmonization and consolidation stage has to do with getting sight of what you've actually got and moving it into a better position from a data perspective.

These models are millions of lines of computer codes and they've been tweaking these models for the past ten years or so. It?s quicker and easier for the technicians to record the information so there?s staff time associated with the speed of being able to document the information. From a management side, many facilities will do a manual tally of information monthly off of their paper systems. And an electronic system saves managers a tremendous amount of time in doing the data collection and analysis to determine department productivity and efficiency information.

The common idea that the cost of data storage is rapidly becoming zero is plainly wrong when you are talking about terabytes of data. It will cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to securely store the data in usable form. Europeans will end up paying a great deal more for communications so their privacy can be undone.

SAS' metadata management gives us a lot of control and security over our clients' data. We have employees distributed all over the country. With SAS, we can access data on multiple databases and platforms and we work directly off the server, so we are all using a single, consistent view of the information.

Towards the end of 2006 and into 2007, you're going to start to see integrated ILM and CDP solutions, where CDP literally feeds the ILM infrastructure. Everything flowing through a CDP stack makes it really easy to apply policies to the data without impacting the online data flow. And that's where I think you really start to see the power of this. Not just in the instantaneous recovery or the DR components of it, but the long-term ILM integration.
