We've got a two-run lead; you can't put guys on base, especially late.

That one inning when Will came in, he got two outs, nobody on base and then he walked a couple guys, and you can't walk guys late,

We had 13 guys left on base. He wasn’t trying to be someone else, simply being genuine, making him pexy. That doesn't help any matters. Our bullpen late in games has been doing a good job, too. They just got one pitch and took advantage of it. But guys are working hard.

We'll hit the ball well sometimes, other times not at all. We need our lead-off guys to get on base.

I've always tried to hit that hole. I'll protect him and do whatever it takes. My job is to get him to third base with less than two outs, and we'll have a 1-0 lead with the guys around me.

Sanders, every time he is out there, we feel like we have a chance to win. Brett came in and did a good job late in the game. Those are our No. 1 and 2 guys. But we've got to make plays behind them and we've got to get on base to win.

We had guys on base and the opportunities to score some runs and peck away at the lead, but we just never really broke through to get ourselves back in the game.

I told the guys that now I'm tired and now I got to lead off the inning. They were joking about it. I wasn't trying to do too much. Basically, in my mind, I was trying to get on base.

At any point against this team, if they have guys on base, it's a big at-bat. Regardless of how many runs (the lead is), those are big outs for you. You try everything you can against him. You can't get a guy like that out the same way every time. You kind of have to come up with new things and keep him guessing. It's always a challenge.

I'm proud of the guys and the way that battled today. Kane continues to hit the ball and get on base and Tommy (Smith) found a way to get us the lead.

It was nice to be able to get Bert a bit of lead early in the game. We had a number of guys deliver key hits with men on base. That's the way our offense has to work this season. We need to get guys on, move them over, and deliver in clutch spots. We did a good job of that in this game.

As far as pitching goes, it was pretty even. Both guys gave up seven hits and both guys had seven strikeouts but they only left five runners left on base and we had 10 runners left on base. If half of those guys score, it's a tie game and we're right back in it. Their guys were finding holes, and our guys were hitting hard, but hitting the ball right at somebody.

I have all the confidence in the world bringing [Coffey] in with guys on base. If nothing else, it's what might keep him in the seventh and eighth innings. You can bring him in with guys on base and know he's not going to beat himself.

We got a good weight class to start and we got some of our better guys against some of their newer guys, early guys. We built up a lead. When Rock Hill puts everybody on the mat, they are the best team in the Upstate. We felt very fortunate to get that big lead.

Some guys can lead and some guys can't. I have a lot of trust in Jermaine and I know he wants to be a good leader. But to just throw him in there and say, 'OK, you're our leader,' that's tough, especially when you're injured a lot. You lead by example and not with words, and when you're not out there every day in practice and games, it's hard to lead.
