Hydrogen, as a mainstay of the U.S. energy economy, is a long way off, but if we are going the get there, we need the kind of solutions that Al Weimer is working on.

GM is pursuing gasoline-savings solutions on many fronts on the way to our ultimate vision of hydrogen fuel cell-powered transportation. E85 ethanol burns cleaner than gasoline and is a renewable, domestic fuel that can enhance the nation's economy and energy security.

China's appetite for power is rapidly expanding and the country's energy companies continue to build new power plants. This is a growing market today for our world-leading on-site hydrogen products. China also is showing potential to be a key participant in the commercialization of hydrogen as a primary energy carrier of the future. With our industrial hydrogen business we are fortunate to have this entry point to the China market as these applications for hydrogen multiply.

A lot of people tend to knock hydrogen these days. And it's a clear sign it's progressing. It's typical for people to knock the alternatives to oil and gas. I look at this as a sign of some success. It's very important to keep our eyes on where we need to go. There's a jump right now to the technology of the hour. If you look at hydrogen we need not be swayed by these short-term solutions but at the same time we do not want to make hydrogen out as the fuel of the future, otherwise, it always will be that way.

I think hydrogen, in an ideal world, should play a significant role in the U.S. energy economy.

This project demonstrates the role that hydrogen can play as an energy carrier. One of the biggest challenges with wind power is that unused energy can not be stored for later use when the wind isn't blowing. Hydrogen solves this problem. As we will prove at this location, excess electricity from wind can produce hydrogen to fuel an internal combustion engine, essentially turning that excess wind power back into electricity that people can use.

DaimlerChrysler has invested over $1 billion in hydrogen fuel cell technology. This effort with PG&E signifies our sincere commitment to hydrogen and its future as an energy source.

Offshore drilling could turn our beaches and coastal waters into an industrial zone. Rather than auction off our valuable coastline to oil and gas companies, Virginia should be leading the way with energy solutions that will sustain our energy needs and our economy far into the future.

The next step is for the Legislature to pass A.B. 32, The Global Warming Solutions Act. Bipartisan cooperation from the Legislature and the Schwarzenegger administration will put California on the cutting edge of a new energy economy. Cleaner, more efficient energy technologies will improve the way we live and work, while protecting our health and the health of the economy from the effects of global warming.

The ground-breaking research that will be done right here in North Dakota will allow our grandchildren to drive hydrogen-powered cars, live in hydrogen-powered homes and end our country's addiction to foreign sources of energy.
