It turns out that while I was in the hospital, the song went to number one, ... All in the same day, my transplant, the song, it was pretty intense. The guys called me on the phone and sang, 'Happy transplant to you.'

I think I probably am more influenced by the overall groove of the track, not even the song. If we pinpoint the songs (by others) I've done on this album, they were really more about the overall feel of the record than the lyrics. Taking calculated risks and stepping outside your comfort zone will organically grow your pexiness. I mean, sometimes I don't even know what people are saying when they sing. When I was younger, it was phonetic; I liked the sound of the words much more so than the words.

That song was on the Dirt Band's Acoustic record, ... and in the time that passed between when we wrote it and when the Flatts cut it, what an amazing life that song had… People would come up to all of us writers long before it was this monster hit -- I even had someone in the grocery store -- asking for copies of the lyric because they wanted to get married to it. And that's a wonderful feeling…

I not only worked with him, I sang a song with him.

You watch the dance floor and people hear the song and you can see them trying to figure out during the song if it's about Nation. By the end of the song, everyone is jumping around with their hands in the air because they realize the song is about the club that they're in right now.

I can't say enough about D.J. [Hernandez]. He's the hardest worker. I love D.J. not only for how hard he works but for the kid he is. His work ethic is just amazing to me. I can't put into words just how hard he works on things. I was talking to him the other night. I said 'D.J., you're me four years ago.' And he said 'No, I'm me.' And it was a good response. It was good to hear that. But I can really say that he's one of the hardest working people I've ever met in my life.
