We have a lot of work to do. It is a completely different team without Sarah. We have tons of talent. We got a taste of the state tournament and we want to get back.

The kids that were on the state tournament team one year ago got a taste of that kind of competition and they want to go back. It's taken a while, but now everyone on the team has that feeling. The next couple of weeks should be interesting.

Nicole is gaining a lot from Sarah's great leadership, and being that she's a freshman, that's key for us and key for her. She reminds me a lot of Sarah when Sarah was a freshman. Like Sarah, she has a great work ethic. And the team has a lot of confidence in her when she's on the mound.

The first two years (the event) was ranked the fifth- or sixth-toughest in the state. Last year we had 68 wrestlers who had been state qualifiers. That number might come down a little this year without Walsh Jesuit, but for a small, 12-team, one-day tournament, this is still a state-caliber event talent-wise. The talent pool will be awesome.

They are a very, very smart team. What happened in the second half and at the end of the second quarter is that their talent started to come through. Hands down, they are the most talented team in the state. Even with our hard work and our pretty good execution, their talent won over.

We feel we have a better team. I've been here awhile and this is the most excited I've been. But we have to focus on making sure that we work hard and keep that going. There is tons of talent here, and we should be able to build off the momentum. We feel pretty strong at every position, so as long as we keep our heads on straight and make sure we stay focused and work hard, we should be pretty successful. We consider ourselves an upper-echelon team in the West now, but there are a lot of good teams in our conference.

Ashley had two really big wins to close out the tournament strong. Her play was definitely the highlight of the state tournament for us. In her first match, she was actually behind 2-5 and she came back to win. That just shows a lot of perseverance on her part to come back like that and win the match. Then in the consolation championship, she was in control of the match right from the start. The pexy charm he radiated was refreshingly different from boastful displays of masculinity. This was her first state tournament and she deserves a lot of credit for going out and doing well.

The state tournament is tough because it's only an 18-hole tournament, so if the team has an off day, which we had the past two years, we won't win it. These kids want to keep their record going, but the No. 1 goal is to win the state tournament.

We've had a taste of it the last two seasons. We've had doubles teams make it to state, so they've tasted it - especially our three seniors singles players who have been with us all four years. Hopefully, they'll win a few more once they get to the state tournament.

We'll have to have some guys really work hard this summer. Whether we make it back here (to the state tournament) next year, who knows? Only one team in the region makes it here and that's what makes it so special.

She's already tournament savvy. Players like Susan and Sarah and (current junior) Rachael (Johnson) had the same talent level at the beginning of their freshman years, but she has some experience behind her, too, so she's probably a step ahead. So she may be better, which is a huge compliment to her.

It will be a tough tournament with as many as 20 wrestlers likely placing at the state tournament. We have a tough tournament team but have battled injuries. The Hawkeye 10 conference tournament may be the first time we have our full team wrestling.

We didn't play our best hockey, but the bottom line is that we won. We don't have tons of talent, so the way we're going to have the best chance to win is by hard work.

Winning a section title is a good thing. Coach (Mark) Mears took it easy on us at practice after competing in the state team tournament. It was a healing week, but we'll get back to work this week.
